Q: What prompted you to decide to become a stylist? Why did you get involved in the fashion business?

I started my career wanting to become a psychologist. As I was studying I realized I needed to have a balance of both creative and business. Having grown up in a business family, I had that part locked down. It was time to get creative.

Fashion had always been my first love and I knew it was what I was meant to do.

Q: What is your favorite article of clothing or accessory?

I live for the perfect McQueen or Hermes scarf, as they have become my signature piece.

Q: What is your typical day / the most challenging part of the day for you?

Because I run two companies I never have a typical day. I may be meeting with a client, working with my team, filming a television segment, or meeting with today’s hottest designers. My life is all about being a purveyor of luxury.

Q: Is there one look you styled that you would consider your “signature” look?

When working with Beverly Hills Lifestyle magazine, I styled Gigi Hadid in a beautiful white crystallized gown and layered her with Martin Katz jewelry, and it was shot against a luxurious bathtub.

It was all about youth, beauty and Hollywood glamour. Without a doubt, I would consider that my signature look.

Q: What’s the biggest “faux pas” when asked to style a celebrity?

The fact that celebrities don’t believe they need a stylist.

Q: Have you ever had a designer who refused to send you clothes? Had a celebrity refuse to wear an outfit or designer?

I have a celebrity client who was attending a major award show. We selected and amazing Zac Posen cocktail dress. It was the perfect look for the evening. To my surprise the next day, when looking at the red carpet photos I saw my client in a one-piece pantsuit. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper.

Q: Who in your opinion has flawless style? Yesterday, today and tomorrow?

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Catherine Zeta Jones, and tomorrow’s icon I have yet to create.

Q: Name your three favorite shops? Name three items ever woman should have in her closet in order to have GREAT style.

Bergdorf Goodman, Erica Courtney, Maxfields.

A crisp, well-tailored white blouse, a fabulous trench coat, and the perfect little black dress.

Q: What’s your favorite trend right now? Which trend would you like to see pass?

The truth of the matter is I actually prefer classics over trends.

If I have to pick one that needs to pass, it would be reliving the 1980s.

Q: Who would you allow to style YOU for an event?

Tom Ford.

Q: What are you wearing RIGHT now? (Knowing this is an online interview and nobody’s looking.)

Even when no one’s looking, I always live my brand. Currently I am wearing an Express eggplant button down shirt, custom Heirloom By Brett Young denim, this season’s hottest McQueen scarf, and I can never be without my favorite Breitling flight watch.

Q: What prompted you to decide to become a stylist? Why did you get involved in the fashion business?

In 2001 I had a friend who was doing little styling gigs here and there, and it piqued my interest.

I was going to FIDM and I would go to the Career Center and take every non-paying gig that seemed even remotely like a styling gig.

It was interesting. This was a long time ago, when people barely knew what a “stylist” was.

Q: What is your favorite article of clothing or accessory?

Always a killer “statement necklace.” I’m not a “big earrings” girl … unless they’re THAT good. Even so, I always feel weird with big dangling things hanging off my ears.

Q: What’s your typical day, and what’s the most challenging part of the day for you?

It depends. Since my career is split between being an on-camera Style Expert and a wardrobe stylist, I could be waking up and sitting at the computer, putting together segments with my producers, pitching segments, emailing brands, or I’m in the showrooms or my office pulling together things for an upcoming shoot.

Either way, I’ve got 50 things done by 10 AM. My days are usually a ‘beautiful blur’ of a million tasks, and that’s how I like it.

Q: Is there one look that you’ve styled that you might consider your “signature style”?

No, actually. It just depends on the client or job.

My motto is: ‘Style is all about dressing for your body, personality, and the occasion.’

I really try to apply that to each client.

I would say I’m best at styling red carpet, lifestyle, and people who are hosts or on-camera. I have nine years of television styling under my belt, so I know what works and what doesn’t … it’s an extremely different world than editorial styling, where anything goes, pretty much.

Q: What’s the biggest “faux pas” when asked to style a celebrity?

I feel like anything goes, but I would say “dressing them in similar looks that other stylists in the past.”

When styling a need celeb, you want to make a fresh impression on their look.

Q: Have you ever had a designer who refused to send you clothes? Or a celebrity who refused to wear an outfit?

Of course! Pulling clothes is all politics, and getting the best designers is contingent on who the celebrity is, and if the designer feels they want that person representing their collection.

That’s why really good relationships help!

Sometimes showrooms will do you a solid for a “lesser” celeb if you’ve placed their clothes on a higher profile celeb in the past.

It’s annoying, but that’s the clothes-slanging business!

I’m a “people person,” so I know how to approach a client when I feel they should wear something, and I know they may not go for it. I’ll never force a client, though.

I just always say, ‘I know you don’t love it, but can you please just try it on for me?’

Many times the client ends up seeing my side, but there have also been times I’ve been proven wrong. It’s all in the creative process, and I’m there to help clients think a little out of the style box.

Q: Who in your opinion has flawless style? Yesterday, today and tomorrow?

Charlize Theron and Kate Moss all the way. Always elegant … almost like they are floating, if that makes sense.

Q: What are some of your favorite shops?

That’s a tough one.

When I know I need to find something unique in LA, I go to Barneys Co-Op, Neimans, Beckley, Milk, Ressurection, Seilian’s Vintage.

I honestly don’t have “one store” that I love all the time

Q: What’s your favorite trend right now? Which trend would you like to see pass?

I love the all-white look for summer.

It’s so clean, elegant and so simplistic! And I’m exhausted of the extreme high-low hem. Bored.

Q: What are you wearing RIGHT now? (Knowing that this is an online / at home interview and nobody’s looking.)

Cotton MONROW shorts (my absolute favorite lifestyle wear designer) and a GAP tank top

Daniel Musto is a fresh and engaging 27-year-old television personality, fashion expert and celebrity stylist. Viewers have come to appreciate Daniel’s singular sense of style through his appearances on NBC’s hit shows Fashion Star and Eva Longoria’s Ready for Love. Daniel also stars in the YouTube series The Stylish.

His styling work is in high demand by celebrities including Jenny McCarthy, Paula Abdul, Ashlee Simpson and Paris Hilton (among others), and his creations have graced the stages of American Idol, XFactor and the pages of People and Rolling Stone. Daniel has also been a runway stylist for designers including John Varvatos, Jessica Simpson and Nicole Richie.

As a fashion journalist, Daniel has had bylines in Cosmopolitan, TV Guide, Huffington Post and UsWeekly, where he is featured every week in the ever-popular “Fashion Police” feature.

Q: What prompted you to decide to become a stylist? Why did you get involved in the fashion business?

I choreographed a number of hip hop dances as a captain of my high school dance team.

Through the process I began designing the costumes, as well. With the exploration of fashion through performance, I learned that I not only loved clothing, but I was great at creating show-stopping looks.

Q: What is your favorite article of clothing or accessory?

A white Gap t-shirt and classic distressed Levi’s. The shoes I wear change often, but the casual clothes usually stay pretty steady.

Q: What’s your typical day, and what’s the most challenging part of the day for you?

Every day is different. The most challenging part is adjusting physically to the insane hours my job demands of me to get the job done.

Q: Is there one look that you’ve styled that you might consider your “signature style”?

I love the pink classic capsleeve Michael Kors dress I put on Kendra Wilkinson for a movie premiere. I paired it with a playful Moschino shoe and really made a statement that declared her image-shift.

Q: What’s the biggest “faux pas” when asked to style a celebrity?

A lot of times people don’t understand how much goes into creating perfect looks for celebrities. The faux pas I see aren’t necessarily in the style, but in the misunderstanding of how intense my business is.

Q: Have you ever had a designer who refused to send you clothes? Or a celebrity who refused to wear an outfit?

Designers are extremely picky about who they dress because it can make or break their futures. I’ve definitely had designers decline to work with a client of mine, but I’ve also pulled amazing looks from designer friends of mine who love me, and know my work will improve the image of their brands.

Q: Who in your opinion has flawless style? Yesterday, today and tomorrow?

Gwyneth Paltrow always looks classic, yet playful. I appreciate the small risks that she and her stylist make.

Q: What are some of your favorite shops?

For retail, Selfridges in London. For re-sale, Decades on Melrose in LA.

Q: Name three items every woman should have in her closet in order to have GREAT style.

Three items every woman needs are a closed-toe pump, an open-toe pump, and a great pair of black skinny jeans.

Q: What’s your favorite trend right now? Which trend would you like to see pass?

I typically don’t follow trends. I feel it’s my job to create them. I do love seeing the way that different variations of fringe appear on the scene each year. It is one of the few ways to provide “movement” to a look, without taking too much of a fashion risk.

Q: Who would you allow to style YOU for an event?

My friend, Delaney Del Prete, always has an amazing eye for menswear. Otherwise, I would trust my team to pull something together for me, because they know me so well and have all the resources to get the job done right!

Q: What are you wearing RIGHT now? (Knowing that this is an online / at home interview and nobody’s looking.)

AHHH! I am having a Clarissa Explains It All fashion-moment. I am wearing plaid pajama pants with a striped, long-sleeve henley. Clarissa LOVED mixing prints, and so do I!

##

ABOUT JAMES MACLEAN

Trend-setting, accomplished and passionate. Those are just a few words to describe luxury marketing expert James MacLean, who has transformed the celebrity product placement industry through events such as GRAMMYS, Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards, American Country Music Awards, Golden Globes, Spike TV Video Game Awards, BET Awards, NAACP Image Awards, Sundance Film Festival and Grand Prix Monaco. He continues to set the pace and raise the bar in some of the most glamorous settings around the globe.
