How to Work or Showcase During LA Fashion Week
LA has a fiercely independent spirit. Maybe that’s why LA’s twice-yearly fashion weeks, unlike so many others, are not centrally organized. This means, at present, there is no single organization to contact.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. On the contrary, Watson: it means you have more opportunity to find where you belong.
Step One: Search for Opportunities on Craigslist.org, LAFashionClassifieds.com and ModelMayhem.com
1) Craigslist.org has two sections where a number of modeling, design, stylist, hair, photography and other fashion show-related posts come up: “Event Gigs” and “Talent Gigs“. We recommend starting there.
2) LAFashionClassifieds.com is a new site where you can post your stylist, modeling or other work portfolio for free, without even having to register.
3) ModelMayhem.com is sort of like Facebook for stylists, models, photographers and designers. They have an entire casting section that’s pretty much second-to-none. Membership is free, but your profile will have to be approved. So while you’re waiting, try Craigslist and FashionWeekGigs.
4) ModelNews.com sometimes runs features on new and established models during fashion week, if you happen to be a model. There’s also a list of open model casting calls in LA.
Step Two: Contact Show Producers
This one’s especially important if you’re a designer who wants to show his or her collection on the runway, though it applies to everyone.
Check the LA Fashion Week Calendar, and click the links to go to the producers’ web pages. They may have opportunities posted already, or you can politely inquire how to apply as a designer, intern, model, stylist, etc. If you’re just starting out, you can even offer to pitch-in for free. Often you can even get college credit for your volunteering duties, especially if it takes the form of an internship.
Remember, as Woody Allen once said: “Eighty percent of success is showing up.”
Step Three: Learn About Scams
We’re just saying to exercise reasonable caution. We recommend this guide to fashion-related scams.
Well, that’s about it. Good luck! : )
